Average ring size
Type a measurement and the sizes appear here.
Sizes are for guidance, following BS 6820 and ISO 8653 as checked on 2026-10-23. Brands cut sizes differently: try the ring on or ask your jeweller before you buy. Disclaimer

The sizes that sell most
Across the trade, women’s rings are stocked from about US 5 to US 7, with US 6 the single most ordered size. Men’s rings run from about US 8 to US 10.5, with US 9 ordered most.
These are sales figures, not anatomy. They tell you what a shop keeps in a drawer; they do not tell you about the person you are buying for.
| Usual range | Most ordered | Inside Ø (mm) | Inside round (mm) | UK | EU / ISO | JP 号 | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Women | US 5–7 | US 6 | 16.5 | 51.9 | L½ | 52 | 12 |
| Men | US 8–10.5 | US 9 | 18.9 | 59.5 | R½ | 60 | 19 |
Millimetres are computed from the most-ordered size in each row.
Why an average is a bad way to guess
The stocked range for women spans US 5 to 7 — that is 5.1 mm of circumference, four whole sizes. Picking the middle of it gives you roughly a one-in-four chance of being right and a good chance of being two sizes out.
Finger size follows height, build, age and what the hands do all day far more than it follows gender. Someone who gardens, climbs or works with their hands will be a size or more above someone of the same build who does not.
Better ways to find the size of a surprise ring
- Borrow a ring she already wears on the same finger of the same hand, and measure it on the screen or lay it on the circle chart of the printed sheet. This is by far the best method.
- Press a ring into soap or a bar of modelling clay and measure the inside of the impression with a ruler.
- Ask the person who would know. A friend or a sibling can ask the question without giving anything away.
- Buy large and resize. Most plain and solitaire rings can be sized down a size or two for a modest fee. Order a size up rather than a size down — too small has to be stretched or cut, which costs more and shows.
- Use a temporary ring. A plain band in the right style for the proposal, then size the real one together.
Which finger, which hand
The ring finger of the dominant hand is usually a quarter to a half size larger than the same finger on the other hand, because the dominant hand works harder. Index and middle fingers usually take a noticeably larger size than the ring finger, and the little finger a much smaller one — so a ring that fits one finger tells you little about another.
That matters for a surprise: a borrowed ring tells you nothing unless you know which finger and which hand it was worn on.
Questions people ask
What is the average ring size for a woman?
US 6 is the most ordered, within a usual range of US 5 to 7. US 6 is 16.5 mm across the inside and 51.9 mm round, which is UK L½, EU/ISO 52 and 12号.
What is the average ring size for a man?
US 9 is the most ordered, within a usual range of US 8 to 10.5. US 9 is 18.9 mm across and 59.5 mm round — UK R½, EU/ISO 60, 19号.
Should I just order the average size?
Only if you have no other option and the ring can be resized. The usual women’s range covers four sizes and 5.1 mm of circumference, so the average is a weak guess. Borrowing a ring she wears is far more reliable.
Does ring size change with age?
Usually yes, upwards. Fingers broaden over the years and arthritic knuckles need a larger ring to pass. A ring bought at twenty often needs sizing by fifty.
Is the right hand the same size as the left?
Rarely. The dominant hand is usually a quarter to a half size larger. Measure the hand the ring will actually be worn on.
