Wide bands need half a size more
This matters more for men than for women, because men’s bands are wider. A 6 mm or 8 mm band touches far more of the finger than a 2 mm one, and it cannot flex round the knuckle the way a thin band does. The ring feels tighter at the same measured size.
The trade rule: from 4 mm add a quarter size, from 6 mm add a half. For a comfort-fit band — rounded on the inside, so less of it actually touches — add nothing, or a quarter at most; the rounded inside is already doing that job.
| Band width | Add | Example: measured US 10 |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 4 mm | nothing | order US 10 |
| 4–6 mm | ¼ size | order US 10¼ |
| 6 mm and up | ½ size | order US 10½ |
| Comfort fit, any width | nothing to ¼ | order US 10 or 10¼ |
Set the band width in the converter above and it applies this for you.
Measuring a man’s finger
Two things go wrong more often on men’s hands. The first is the knuckle: men’s knuckles are more likely to be much wider than the base of the finger, so the ring has to be sized to pass the knuckle and will then spin at the base. Ask about sizing beads — two small bumps inside the band — rather than going down a size.
The second is temperature. Hands that have been outside in winter can read a full size small. Measure indoors, warm, at the end of the day.
Use the paper sizer or a strip of paper; the usual men’s range is well inside what both cover.
Metals that cannot be resized
Tungsten carbide, ceramic and titanium cannot be sized — they are too hard, or they crack. Stainless steel usually cannot be sized economically either. For those, get the finger measured on a steel sizer before you buy, and buy from somewhere with a free exchange.
Gold, silver, platinum and palladium all size normally, up or down, usually by one or two sizes without trouble.
Questions people ask
What is the average men’s ring size?
US 9, within a usual range of US 8 to 10.5. US 9 is 18.9 mm across the inside and 59.5 mm round — UK R½, EU/ISO 60.
Do men’s and women’s ring sizes use the same scale?
Yes. There is one scale; men simply sit higher on it. A US 9 is a US 9 whoever wears it.
Should I size up for a wide wedding band?
Yes — a quarter size from 4 mm wide and a half size from 6 mm. A comfort-fit band, rounded on the inside, needs little or nothing extra.
Can a tungsten ring be resized?
No. Tungsten carbide, ceramic and titanium cannot be sized. Measure carefully before buying and check the exchange policy.
My knuckle is much bigger than my finger — what size do I order?
The size that passes the knuckle, then ask the jeweller for sizing beads so the ring does not spin at the base. Ordering the smaller size leaves you with a ring you cannot get on.
